A Wisconsin Army reservist who had friends across the country through an Internet fantasy baseball league and kept tabs on his team's progress while serving in the Iraq war has become the 48th Wisconsin service member killed in that conflict. Sgt. 1st Class Matthew R. Kading, 32, of Madison died Monday at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, the U.S. Department of Defense announced Tuesday.

Patrick Mcilheran; Top-Notch Science Deserves Citizens' Hard Thought

Very soon, Gov. Jim Doyle will veto a bill to ban human cloning. By some reckoning, the bill will have harmed the state merely by making it to the governor's desk. The bill, however, serves the state by raising a critical question.

Quick Hit

I've been getting conflicting advice on Wisconsin lawn care of late. Did I really have to mow my grass one more time before snow falls? (Hint: It's now November.) After all, the woolly mammoth didn't get a haircut during the Ice Age. Some tell me to trim that lawn; others, to let it grow. I should note, however, that folks who tell me to mow also tell me I should have drained the snowblower's gas tank from last winter. Ha! What do they know? O. Ricardo Pimentel, editorial page editor

Troubled Waters; Control the Seaway

Here's what not to do about the St. Lawrence Seaway, whose serious problems were outlined in a just-concluded, three-part series in the Journal Sentinel: Make it bigger. Here's what should be done: 1) Enact tighter federal controls on ocean-going vessels entering the Seaway by having Congress finally approve the National Aquatic Invasive Species Act. 2) If Congress continues to sit on its thumbs, the states that are home to the lakes, including Wisconsin, should take matters into their own ha...

Inside Tv & Radio; If It Seems Goofy, It Probably Is

Listeners to WXSS-FM (103.7) the last couple of days have been wondering what's going on with a supposed hacking of the Web site for the teen-skewing station better known as Kiss FM. If you went to www.1037kissfm.com on Tuesday, you saw a picture of a piece of paper with the hand-scrawled message reading: "I've got your 10 grand . . . I'll be in contact."
