Gang Crackdown Progress Seen; Authorities Say Crime Is Down in Target Neighborhood

Crime has decreased in a north-side neighborhood since a crackdown last month on a violent gang that operated in the area, Milwaukee police officials said Tuesday. The gang, known as the Nash Street Boys, terrorized residents in the neighborhood near N. 19th and W. Nash streets, selling about $1 million worth of cocaine and marijuana over a two-year period, officials said. The gang was targeted Feb. 14, when teams of law enforcement officers, led by Milwaukee police and the FBI, arrested 39 p...

Election 2008; 'We're Going to Win,' Dean Says; Primary Race Will Toughen Nominee, Dnc Chairman Says

Madison -- Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean called for unity Tuesday, telling supporters to advocate for their preferred candidate but to rally behind whoever earns the Democratic nomination. "The only way John McCain wins is if we're divided," Dean said, referring to the U.S. senator from Arizona who has locked up the Republican nomination.

Mcgee's New Lawyers Pick Up Wiretap Fight

The new attorneys for Milwaukee Ald. Michael McGee are arguing that wiretap recordings in his case should be thrown out and criminal charges should be dismissed because of vagueness in the law and the prosecutor's failure to hand over evidence. McGee is charged in state court with making threats, violating court orders and election violations. He is now represented by former Milwaukee Ald. Larraine McNamara-McGraw and former Texas prosecutor Larry Jarrett.

Tosa Site for Campus Opposed; Some Say Uwm Research Park Should Be Built Downtown

"UWM Downtown, not UW-Tosa." That's the message from a small group of Milwaukee residents pushing for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's proposed new engineering campus and research park to be built downtown rather than in the suburbs.

Corrections

A column Tuesday on the Perspectives page by community columnist Brian Back incorrectly stated that Bill Christofferson is a former campaign chairman for Gov. Jim Doyle. Christofferson is a former campaign director for Doyle. The column also incorrectly stated that Christofferson ran the Greater Wisconsin Committee. Christofferson was a consultant to the committee from 2004 until a year ago, when he retired. He now serves on its board of directors. - [currency] - -

Patrick Mcilheran; No One Here but Us Scalias

If it's such a bad year to run as a conservative, why are candidates doing it? They are. Incumbent Lisa Neubauer and challenger William Gleisner, running for the Wisconsin Court of Appeals, call themselves conservatives. Neither was until mere minutes before the race.

11th Supervisory District; Experience Counts; We Don't Always Agree with Him, but Borkowski Works Hard to Connect with His Constituents.

We recommend Mark Borkowski for a fifth term on the Milwaukee County Board, representing the 11th Supervisory District. We do so because of Borkowski's knowledge of the district and his outreach to stay connected to constituents. But also because, while challenger Doug Schmidt is no doubt well-intentioned, Borkowski simply has more valuable experience to offer.

3rd Aldermanic District; Flaherty has the Edge; the Race Features Two Solid Candidates, but Flaherty's Consensus-Building Makes a Good Case for Him.

Milwaukee Ald. Mike D'Amato's decision not to run again has created a sort of perfect political storm in the 3rd Aldermanic District, which includes the east side and Riverwest. Patrick Flaherty, a community activist, and Nik Kovac, a freelance journalist, make for a tough choice. Both are progressive and agree on most issues. Our nod goes to Flaherty. His track record as a consensus- builder offers the most potential in a district with so many politically involved and sometimes contentious i...

9th Aldermanic District; Puente Our Choice; the Milwaukee Alderman has Given His Constituents Solid Service. In Doing so, He has Earned Another Term.

The voters of the 9th Aldermanic District in Milwaukee have their pick April 1 of two good candidates, both of whom we believe would serve the district well. But we believe Ald. Robert Puente's quiet work on behalf of constituents on public safety and economic development issues has earned him a second term in this northwest side district. Puente, 53, spent 27 years on the Milwaukee Police Department, which gave him the experience to understand and deal effectively with issues of crime. He ha...

West Allis; Devine for Mayor; Supervisor Brings Experience, a Refreshing Energy and Some Good Thinking to His Bid for the West Allis Mayor's Office.

In his four years on the Milwaukee County Board, Dan Devine worked hard, came up with some interesting ideas and provided his constituents with good public service. We think he'll do all that and more if he is elected mayor of West Allis on April 1. Devine and his opponent, West Allis Ald. Linda Dobrowski, 58, differ little on the issues. They both talk about the need to crack down on absentee landlords and crime; they both recognize the importance of redevelopment of brownfields and other si...

Inside Tv & Radio; an Xm, Sirius Merger Opens Door for Old- Fashioned Radio to Think Local

This week's Justice Department approval of the merger of the competing XM and Sirius satellite radio companies -- along with the pending OK from the Federal Communications Commission -- offers old- fashioned "terrestrial" radio a blueprint for survival. With a strengthened, single satellite radio company offering tons of music channels and a wide variety of niche programming to a national audience willing to pay for it, free radio of the AM and FM variety is free to focus on local, local, local.
