The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
By the end of last year, the Green Bay Packers had every reason to feel optimistic about their running game heading into the 2008 season. That outlook was based almost solely on the emergence of Ryan Grant, who was stolen in a trade with the New York Giants last Sept. 1 for a sixth-round draft choice, and then wound up as the team's unquestioned starter at halfback after rushing for 1,186 yards and 11 touchdowns in only 12 games (including playoffs) as its featured back.
Green Bay Packer general manager Ted Thompson proved he values talent over need when he drafted defensive tackle Justin Harrell with the 16th overall pick in 2007 -- a move that raised eyebrows because of the talent and depth he already had at the position. With that in mind, how could anyone have truly been surprised by what Thompson did this time around in the draft in April?
2008 Packer Trainiing Camp Preview: A Fan's Guide
THE BASICS Green Bay Packers training camp traditionally has been an event to experience, but now fans can take in action beyond the field during their visit to Titletown.
When the Packers signed Donald Lee after he'd been waived by the Miami Dolphins coming out of training camp nearly two years ago, it barely registered a blip on the screen to most. Looking back, though, the signing was one of the shrewdest of general manager Ted Thompson's tenure.
Packer Notes <> Rivera Will Go Out in Green and Gold <> Guard to Retire with Packers
Former Packer guard Marco Rivera, who spent nine seasons (1996- 2004) in Green Bay, has informed the club of his decision to retire with the team. General manager Ted Thompson made the announcement Monday night. "Marco was the consummate professional," Thompson said. "His toughness and approach to the game of football provided a great model for his teammates, as did his dedication to charitable work."
Tom Silverstein <> Packers Should Let Fickle Favre Find His Way
The Green Bay Packers and Brett Favre are zooming down the middle of a desert highway on course for a head-on collision. Perhaps it's time for the Packers to pull off to the side of the road first.
Grapevine <> Get Ready, Get Set, Two-a-Days Nearly Here
As always, the arrival of the Green Bay Packers training camp caps off the long, hot summer. The first of many two-a-day practices are scheduled for Monday. Synchronize your watches.
Turnover at key positions will once again hit the Green Bay Packers' special teams in 2008. Last season, it was Mason Crosby beating out Dave Rayner for the kicking job. This season will feature not only a battle between Thomas Gafford and J.J. Jansen to replace the retired Rob Davis at long snapper, but also a duel between incumbent punter Jon Ryan and newcomer Ken DeBauche as well as a few new faces in the return game.
Nick Barnett has never been one to go with the flow. So while many of his Green Bay Packer teammates undoubtedly spent their final weeks of freedom this summer dreading their return to training camp, the sixth-year middle linebacker has been champing at the bit to get back to work in earnest for a good portion of the off- season.
Tarnished legend? I hope not. As a very old Packer fan, I have been really upset over this retirement saga. Brett has been the toast of the NFL for these many years, and I would hate to see him spoil that image by any late, stupid decisions.
