At the Table Good Food Can Be Counter Intuitive 3 Eateries Offer Delicious Dishes On a Budget

A restaurant doesn't need tablecloths to serve good food. Sometimes it doesn't even need a wait staff. Some of the meals I've enjoyed most in the past several months have been at a diner with a vintage lunch counter -- Daymaker Cafe in Wauwatosa -- and two restaurants where food is ordered at a counter -- Pat's Rib Place in Waukesha and The National on the near south side. It's enough to make me want to join the counter culture.

Side Dish 2009; Sees 30 Eateries Close

As the year ends, it's time to take stock of the restaurants that have left the Milwaukee area's dining scene. Some were longtime institutions; 2009 began with the announcement that the remaining Heinemann's Restaurants in Milwaukee, Fox Point and Brookfield would be closing. Heinemann's opened in 1923. Some restaurants had been open less than a year.
