After 55 years of selling furniture, Armin Koch in Whitefish Bay is going out of business, the latest in a long list of local independents unable to withstand competition from China and the slowdown in the housing market.

"It's difficult for the small people to compete anymore," said Jon Koch, who runs the family business. "We decided to not try to fight that uphill battle."
