Before the girls cross country season began, Arrowhead senior Abbey O'Connell was appointed captain of the Warhawks team. Like everything else, it seems, she took the news in stride.
"I find that it's really important to be close," she said, matter- of-factly, about her team-wide popularity. "Some of my best friends are on the team with me."While the Warhawks are close off the tracks and trails, it seems that few of her teammates -- and for that matter, very few of her prep counterparts in the state -- can keep up with the high-powered strider.After all, only two runners -- Bay Port's Trista Baye and Kenosha Tremper's Kellie Schneider -- finished ahead of the sprightly O'Connell last year in the WIAA Division 1 state meet at Wisconsin Rapids.
