G. Edwin Howe, who founded Aurora Health Care Inc. and transformed the economics of medical care across much of Wisconsin, announced Friday that he will retire as soon as a successor is found.

Howe, 65, started out in 1984 with a succession of mergers and acquisitions that expanded into the state's largest network of health facilities, with $2.8 billion in 2005 revenue, and, by Aurora's calculations, the state's largest private-sector employer, with nearly 25,000 employees.
