New State Baptist Leaders Share Mission; Both Urge Joint Efforts to Address Urban Issues

The new presidents of two Baptist organizations representing at least 80 African-American churches in southern Wisconsin share similar visions of working cooperatively while getting their congregations to do much more to actively address homelessness, violence, school dropout rates and other state urban issues.

The Wisconsin General Baptist State Convention installed E.L. Thomas, pastor of Victory Missionary Baptist Church, 2661 N. Teutonia Ave., as its new president Friday night in a ceremony attended by the Rev. William J. Shaw, a Philadelphia pastor and president of the Nashville-based National Baptist Convention USA Inc. He will serve a six-year term, assisting about 50 churches.
