Barrett Calls for Gas-Tax Exemption; He Says Municipalities Would Pass On Savings

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett on Tuesday called on the state Legislature to exempt municipalities from paying the gasoline tax on fuel for squad cars, firetrucks, school buses and other vehicles used by local governments. The savings, he said, should be used to provide direct relief for local taxpayers.

The mayors of West Allis, Wauwatosa and Greenfield joined Barrett at a news conference. He said that similar news conferences were held simultaneously in Madison and Superior and that Appleton and La Crosse officials were planning to duplicate the effort in the next few days.
