A third timber sale in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest has been blocked after a federal judge in Milwaukee ruled that the U.S. Forest Service did not adequately assess the environmental effects of logging in a 5,600-acre tract near Clam Lake in Sawyer and Ashland counties.

The decision by Judge Lynn Adelman on Friday means that, for now, 22,140 acres of timber land in Wisconsin's national forest is off limits to loggers until the forest service can propose a logging plan that satisfies federal environmental laws.
