Bookmarks; His Passion, Joy: The New Yorker

Summary


He won a Pulitzer Prize for his 1993 book, "Lenin's Tomb: The Last Days of the Soviet Empire," and his writings are showcased in four other books, the latest of which, "Reporting: Writings From the New Yorker" came out last month. But David Remnick sees himself these days as an editor, not a writer. He'd rather be editing, anyhow, he says, his cell phone to his ear as he walks the Chicago streets.

"I haven't written a proper book-length book since I started editing the magazine," he says. "(Writing) is what I can do given time. Mostly what interests me and not incidentally the capacity to have a greater impact is the magazine. And I cannot let (my) writing detract from the magazine one iota. If I'm thinking of writing something for the magazine and another writer comes along with another idea, I bail out."
