Bradford Beach used to be a sunny playground for all of Milwaukee. But in recent years pollution-related health advisories and the stench of decaying algae have kept swimmers away in droves.

Hoping to jump-start a movement to reclaim the beach, a new citizens group wants to raise as much as $500,000 to build a children's play area and water garden there. In just a few weeks the 30-member Friends of Bradford Beach has already collected $5,500, according to one of its founders, Deborah Lukovich of Mequon.
