Rebuilding the devastated Gulf Coast could result in shortages of construction materials nationwide, increasing expenses for builders in states such as Wisconsin.

Some of the shortages could be temporary, as the United States imports more lumber and other materials to meet a crushing demand and stem runaway prices. With a little luck, some trade associations said, the government will be convinced to reduce or eliminate trade barriers on cement from Mexico and lumber from Canada.
