Vernon -- Residents knocked down a wall -- or at least voted to do so -- Wednesday night at an annual town meeting in the first of several actions aimed at checking the power of their town chairman and demonstrating the power of the people.

In a rollicking four hours during which sheriff's deputies arrived to keep order, the residents took full advantage of a town policy that allows them to make up and approve their own rules at annual meetings.
