Grad student relishes grading the umps
Deep in the concrete tunnels of Miller Park, Christopher Miller pulls up a stool and watches most Brewers home games on a television and two computers. Miller, a graduate student, has a part-time job operating the camera-and-computer system that grades how well Major League Baseball umpires call balls and strikes. The QuesTec Umpire Information System, which is now used in 10 major-league ballparks, has drawn controversy from players and umpires who criticize it for automating a part of a very human game. Reporter Derrick Nunnally sat in with Miller as he graded a game during a recent Brewers' homestand to find out how the technology really works.See the full content of this document
