Inspired by the Millions More Movement, a group of community activists in Milwaukee is appealing to the multibillion-dollar rap industry to stop producing the violent and sexually loaded lyrics and videos that have made hip-hop the avant-garde of popular culture.

In a national appeal addressed to no one in particular among the music's mega-stars but mailed this month to the nation's major newspapers, the group's "Open Letter to the Hip-Hop/Rap Community" is an attempt to prick the collective conscience of the rap community, said Ron Johnson, one of 10 group members who signed the appeal.
