Comet Cafe has become an institution on Milwaukee's east side since it opened in fall 1995. But the once smoky coffee hangout at 1947 N. Farwell Ave. underwent major expansion over the summer, adding menu items and a bar, and creating a sleek new look. It also marked the birth of beard night on Wednesdays, a facial hair extravaganza where Kenny Rogers-emulators partake in beard trivia, beard of the week contests, and drink specials for anyone a week or so past a shave. The promotion is the brainchild of bearded bartending duo Robert Collins and Jon Lawson, two guys with some serious scruff. Collins, who has grown his out for 8 years, tattooed "ZZ Top" on the inside of his bottom lip. They told Bob Purvis of the Journal Sentinel staff all he ever wanted to know about Comet's Wednesday world of the unshaven.
