For decades, flamboyant attorney James Shellow has been regarded as among Milwaukee's most eloquent and resourceful defense lawyers, but Sunday he ran out of words.

Gilda Shellow, the charismatic behind-the-scenes orchestrator of their husband-and-wife law practice for over 40 years, died of vascular failure early Sunday in a hospital in Nice, France. She was 76 and had achieved her prominence trying civil and, later, family court cases while guiding the frequently inventive defense tactics of the other law partners in their firm, including her husband.
