About 2 million Wisconsin voters - roughly half of the state's voting-age population - are expected to cast ballots in today's election, according to projections from the state Elections Board.

That would represent an uptick from 44% in 2002, said Kevin Kennedy, executive director of the board. A hotly contested governor's race as well as high-profile ballot initiatives such as the constitutional amendment on marriage and a referendum on the death penalty will drive up turnout, he said.

Clerks in Waukesha County were predicting even higher turnout.

Kris Schmidt, Brookfield's elections clerk, foresees turnout as high as 80% of registered voters, and county Clerk Kathy Nickolaus projected turnout of 63% to 64% - slightly more than the 62% turnout recorded locally during the governor's race four years ago.
