Summary


All in a tizzy about not getting as much federal transportation money as they think they should, some Waukesha County supervisors are talking about pulling out of the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission, the agency that controls the money. That talk is just as foolish as similar talk earlier this year by some Milwaukee County supervisors who wanted to study whether the money the county was sending to the agency "may be best kept in Milwaukee."

Since 1960, SEWRPC has capably filled the role of a regional planning agency that communities can turn to for expertise. Not everything the agency has done has been popular; not every idea has been good. And questioning bad or unpopular decisions is certainly appropriate. But overall, its work has been first-rate, apolitical and based on sound engineering and planning principles. Withdrawing from the organization would be a mistake.
