They've pulled up stakes and settled in our city. But they still cling to a tiny piece of the places they once called home. They are the ones with the exotic area codes that confuse and intrigue when they pop up on caller IDs.

Cover Story; Speaking in (Area) Code; How Does (414) Look to Newcomers?

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 133,000 City of Milwaukee residents were born in a different state. In 2005, 2 percent of the city's population arrived during the previous year.

Here are six recent transplants who bring their unique calling card to Milwaukee from around the country. They're part of a group of people who are creating a more diverse, eclectic and vibrant city.

Some are natives who left before they were adults and returned to discover a revitalized city. Others came for the first time and found Milwaukee wasn't what they expected. They're all still adjusting to the Brew City lifestyle, to say nothing of the accent.

mke asked for their perspectives as both outsiders and insiders: Why did they come here? How does Milwaukee compare with the places they came from? What else, besides their area codes, are they holding on to?
