Cudahy Mayor Ryan McCue owes his constituents an explanation of why he voted this week against a proposed development that would have included a Wal-Mart Supercenter and an indoor soccer training facility. Maintaining silence on why he broke a deadlocked Plan Commission and voted to reject the proposal is an insult to the people who put McCue in office. They deserve better.

And the reason should be better than the idea that Cudahy's image somehow would be damaged by having a Wal-Mart within the city limits. There is nothing inherently wrong with having a one-stop, low-cost store that will bring jobs to a neighborhood. In fact, given the current economic climate, there is a good case to be made that a Wal-Mart would help Cudahy families much more than it might - - might -- hurt the city's image.
