Wisconsin Dells Even on an early spring day there was a hint of summertime bustle in the famous little river playground. The T- shirt shops on Main St. were trolling for the small groups of tourists strolling downtown sidewalks. On the upper deck of a tour boat bound for the Upper Dells a goodly crowd of riders enjoyed the warm sunshine, and (don't ask how I know this) there were already families relaxing in some of the cottages that surround a certain golf course.

Maybe, I decided, they all came early to get good seats for the city's sesquicentennial. Let's hope they brought their calculators, though, because it takes some ciphering to understand how a city named Wisconsin Dells in 1931 can celebrate its 150th anniversary.
