Madison Gov. Jim Doyle distanced himself Wednesday from an indicted state administrator, saying he'd never met the woman federal prosecutors say manipulated a bid process to award a state travel contract to a firm whose executives contributed to the governor's re-election campaign.

"I've certainly never met (Georgia) Thompson, and from what I understand the contract was awarded to the lowest bidder, a Wisconsin company, and actually saved taxpayers $30,000," Doyle said in a statement, issued while he was touring Kuwait on a trip arranged by the federal government.

Others have disputed whether the state saved money on the contract, however.
