It was the day Chicago ran out of caskets.

By far the worst maritime disaster in Great Lakes history took place in downtown Chicago, 20 feet from shore.

At 7:30 a.m. July 24, 1915, the excursion steamer Eastland, loaded to capacity with more than 2,500 passengers, rolled over at its dock on the Chicago River. Hundreds were trapped below decks as the polluted water flooded into the ship.

When the last body was pulled from the overturned vessel, 844 people were dead, many of them children and young women. Twenty-two entire families were wiped out.
