Madison -- A state audit Friday found problems in the state's health inspection program of grocery stores, delicatessens and convenience stores -- including regulators taking too long to confront the worst violators, and late inspections of about one- third of those businesses.

For example, according to the audit, state Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection Department officials waited until June 2007 to confront the owner of a Greendale deli about 111 violations found there over the previous 65 months.
