Charming and forthright, former Hewlett-Packard Co. chief executive officer Carly Fiorina told a Milwaukee audience Friday about the disadvantages of being a woman in business and the roadblocks she faced trying to change a male-dominated culture within one of Silicon Valley's largest companies.

Fiorina, who was appointed president and CEO in 1999, said Hewlett-Packard was an American business icon, but its profits were deteriorating and its growth had stagnated because the company wasn't innovative in its approach to business.
