Former Ald. Basil Ryan served an important role as a kind of watchdog when he was on the Franklin Common Council, and the mayoral candidate has made some telling criticisms of city policies. But being a vocal and, at times, even an accurate critic doesn't necessarily qualify Ryan, 51, to lead a Common Council and a city.

Mayor Tom Taylor's experience and leadership abilities certainly do qualify him for the role. His record as mayor for the past two years has earned him a second term. He brings impressive credentials to the job, having worked as a longtime county administrator and having chaired most of Franklin's key committees.
