It certainly was no surprise Tuesday that Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn were elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame with overwhelming support in their first year on the ballot.

And, considering the circumstances, it was no surprise that Mark McGwire didn't come close in his first attempt.

Hall Voting Goes As Expected; Gwynn, Ripken in; Mcgwire Not Even Close

Ripken and Gwynn received two of the highest vote percentages ever as the only players selected for induction in Cooperstown, N.Y., on July 29. Ripken garnered 537 of the record 545 votes cast by eligible members of the Baseball Writers Association of America, for a 98.5% total, the third-highest percentage ever.

Two of the ballots cast were left blank.

Only Tom Seaver, with 98.83% in 1992, and Nolan Ryan, with 98.79% in 1999, received a higher...
