Entering Saturday, the red-hot Counsell was batting .296 in 257 at-bats. Only one other player 38 or older, Oakland's Jason Giambi (38), had more at-bats (269) before landing on the disabled list. But Giambi (.193, 11 HRs, 40 RBI) had the advantage of getting many of those at-bats as a designated hitter, a luxury Counsell doesn't have.
