Summary
Charleston, S.C. - Visitors often are awed by the striking wrought-iron work displayed all around this historic city. Much of it was done by local ornamental ironworker Philip Simmons, who was named a National Folk Treasure by the Smithsonian Institution and whose work is displayed there, among other museums and galleries around the country.
Simmons, who will turn 95 on June 9, often can be found in the garage-sized workshop next to his home in a mostly residential neighborhood north of downtown.
