Takes Five; Janet Henriksen; Fishing Group Wants Everyone to Know the Joy of a Great Catch

Summary

Growing up on a Hayward lake, Janet Henriksen spent many hours fishing. Now she helps people with disabilities fish, spreading the enjoyment of the sport to those who otherwise might not get the chance to spend a summer day on a bucolic lake trolling for walleye. Henriksen, 40, is executive director of Fishing Has No Boundaries, a non-profit organization with 21 chapters in 11 states that schedules fishing trips for people with disabilities. Started in 1988 by a Hayward professional fishing guide who became disabled in an accident, the group provides everything needed to help people fish. This year, 28 fishing trips are scheduled, including seven in Wisconsin. Henriksen, whose sister was born with spina bifida, talked with Journal Sentinel reporter Meg Jones about the group ( www.fhnbinc.org) at the Journal Sentinel Sports Show at State Fair Park.
