Lady Elgin Memorial; Group Seeks Berth for Steamer Statue

Summary


It was said the sounds of mourning came from nearly every house in Milwaukee's Third Ward and that the city's Irish population was decimated after an excursion steamer, headed back from Chicago, sank on a stormy September night in 1860.

Nearly a century and a half later, a two-story, bronze sculpture is being planned as a memorial for the 300 or so who died when the Lady Elgin went down, the second greatest loss of life in the recorded history of the Great Lakes.
