What began as an effort to improve his own health and fitness more than two decades ago -- running and bicycling in races that happened to benefit charities -- has come full circle for Jerry Halkoski.

A longtime English and social studies teacher in Oconomowoc schools who retired in 1996, Halkoski, 69, is starting his 25th year of benefit walks, runs and rides that have taken him along hundreds of miles in Wisconsin and nine other states. But now, he and his wife, Debbie, 67, who's long supported him in those efforts, are also the ones orchestrating some charity events, done with the determination of a family familiar with life-altering illnesses.
