The long, still horizon line of Lake Michigan is just out of view from Gary Pollack's nursing home window, though his cloudy blue eyes drift in that direction, sometimes several times in a single moment, as if he's looking for something.

Pollack, who suffers from schizophrenia, complications from alcoholism and brain injuries, among other things, appears older than his 64 years.

Art From Street Level; Pollack's Work Sorts Out Frenetic Jumble of His Life

He shares the stuff of his life being hit by a car, pining after blond waitresses, being "disowned," working at a liquor store, betting against the Brewers in fragmented sentences that either pile up, rapid fire, one after the other, or get suspended, hijacked by fleeing thoughts.

Now confined to a bed, his legs are so thin they look like another pair of arms, permanently crimped up toward his chest, unable to be stretched straight.
