As most any body shop around the state can tell you, Wisconsin has a deer problem. You can see evidence of it in the state's forests, too, or even on the streets of Milwaukee.

The nine-day gun deer season, which opened at sunup this morning, is the state's single most important tool for management of the herd, as Journal Sentinel outdoor writer Paul A. Smith pointed out this week. A successful hunt is vital to keeping the growing number of deer in check.
