But the Big East Conference was created more than 27 years ago with more modest intentions, namely increased media coverage and more NCAA tournament bids for a select group of mostly private schools in major media markets stretching from New England to Washington, D.C.

Marquette Joins the Big East; a Real High Riser; Conference Made Name in Basketball

It was the brainchild of then-Providence athletic director Dave Gavitt, who invited his counterparts from St. John's, Georgetown and Syracuse to the LaGuardia Airport Sheraton on May 8, 1979, to discuss the feasibility of such an alliance. The four agreed on the basics, and later that month at the Providence Civic Center in Rhode Island, it officially became a reality.
