Phoenix - The Green Bay Packers usually grouse privately about the National Football League's system for awarding compensatory draft picks, but on Monday they should have been praising it for its generosity.

The NFL awarded the Packers a seventh-round draft pick for its free agent net loss last season, even though the Packers signed three free-agent starters. The compensation isn't great - the 33rd pick in the seventh round, No. 243 overall - but it's better than nothing at all and gives the Packers a selection in each of the first six rounds and three in the seventh.
