Philadelphia A few years ago while visiting friends in Philadelphia, my son saw a horse-drawn carriage near Independence Hall. Being a kid, he wanted to pet the horse. Being a Philadelphian, the driver snapped, "Hey, the petting zoo is on 34th."

Having been to the City of Brotherly Love about three dozen times, I could see this coming just as sure as William Penn stands sentry above City Hall. Though the boy's Midwestern sensibilities had taken a direct hit, I tried to explain that Philadelphia is generally gruffer than most American cities.
