Years ago, the coach of what was then a major independent was asked why he did not like to throw the ball. "Three things can happen," he said, "and two of them are bad."

Although it wasn't a particularly original line, it did say something about a man who liked to know the odds, as well as someone who avoided Las Vegas in much the same way that Tom Cruise needs to stay the heck off Oprah's couch.
