Summary


Israel is well within the bounds of reasonable conduct to attack those who attack it first, as Hezbollah has done from its southern Lebanon bases. The attack came after the terrorist organization crossed the border and kidnapped two Israeli soldiers.

But it is not reasonable for Israel to conduct this attack so as to imperil its own long-term security and move the Middle East closer to the precipice of wider conflict. By essentially making Lebanon generally pay for Hezbollah atrocities, Israel undermines one of the few democratically elected governments in the vicinity, one that, if successful in truly ridding itself of its Syrian and Hezbollah yokes, is likely to be a beacon of moderation in a very intemperate region.
