Harkening back to the NAACP's historic mission of fighting for equal rights and social justice, a top official called upon the association's members to be vigilant in maintaining the group's identity as the "conscience of a nation."

"There comes a time in each of our NAACP lives when writing resolutions and policy statements ain't enough; there comes a time when educational retreats at Harvard University ain't enough. There comes a time when marching ain't enough; lobbying ain't enough," said Roslyn M. Brock, who gave a fiery keynote address Monday during the organization's opening plenary session at the Midwest Airlines Center.
