Review; Newberry Consort Revives Historic Music Tradition

Summary


The Newberry Consort surveyed the secular music of Elizabethan England Saturday evening to open Early Music Now's 20th presenting season.

The music ranged chronologically from works by Robert Johnson (1540-1625) to John Wilson (1595-1674) and stylistically from brainy counterpoint to humble folk songs. The folk music, as interpreted by arranger-violinist David Douglass, sounds close to what we think of today as Celtic music the Chieftains wouldn't stretch much to take up "The Beginning of the World," a swaggering drinking anthem.
