"Public health officials aren't sure why H1N1 flu vaccinations are lagging among African-Americans. They just know they have a potentially life-threatening problem on their hands if the disease becomes more prevalent or virulent. Nationally, fewer blacks seek vaccination; here in Greater Cleveland, the same appears to hold true . . . Officials fear black people erroneously believe the shots are dangerous or mistrust the medical establishment. But the decision to reject flu shots can be deadly . . . Local public service ads could also give the maligned vaccine a shot in the arm. With so many at risk, the extra efforts are worth a try."
