Madison The effort to re-establish limits on pain and suffering damages to medical malpractice victims is headed back to the drawing board after the state Assembly on Thursday failed to override Gov. Jim Doyle's veto of a bill setting new caps on such awards.

With a 63-36 vote, supporters of the bill (AB 766) weren't able to muster the two-thirds majority necessary to override the veto; the original vote on the bill in October was 64-30.
