Though the draft ended when I was 9, I've managed to serve with draftees.

In my 20s, I volunteered at a nursing home. We mainly pushed wheelchairs - onto the elevator, down to lunch, chatting a bit with the residents. I found it fulfilling, but the teens drafted to help by some school service project apparently didn't. A lot of them malingered, ignoring residents when they could, putting in time. They came and went.
