Summary


Saturday evening, pianist Phillip Bush celebrated the centennial of Ravel's "Miroirs" ("Mirrors") by pairing each movement of the suite with a piece from the 1980s or 1990s. Bush said, by way of introduction, that he chose the newer works by free association. The results pointed more toward astute calculation, as Bush's matchmaking instincts turned out to be on target in every case.

The moonlit fluttering of Ravel's "Noctuelles" ("Night Moths") found its mate in William Bolcom's "Butterflies, Hummingbirds." Bolcom's piece could have been a jagged and extroverted extension of Ravel's.
