St. Paul, Minn. -- With Hurricane Gustav headed for the Gulf Coast, Republicans have put their four-day national convention on standby, scrapping tonight's speeches by President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and others and saying their elaborate showcase for the newly forged ticket of John McCain and Sarah Palin is at the mercy of Mother Nature.

"This is the time when we have to do away with our party politics and we have to act as Americans," said McCain, who is scheduled to accept his party's nomination in St. Paul on Thursday.
