Milwaukee Water Works is unable to immediately provide New Berlin with additional water during peak demand periods, the utility superintendent said Friday, further complicating the suburb's effort to switch its water system from deep wells to Lake Michigan water.

New Berlin is under a state order to cut potentially cancer- causing radium levels in drinking water from its western wells. The preferred solution of Mayor Jack Chiovatero and other New Berlin leaders is to shut down the bad wells and purchase Lake Michigan water from Milwaukee to be imported to all residents.
