When Scott "Scooter" Schmidt's family received $5,000 from friends in the days following his death, they pondered whether to use it as a reward to find his killer.
They decided instead to help others, something his sister, Susan Schmidt, said her brother always did before his May 26, 2005, death. He was shot in his apartment at the corner of Palmer St. and North Ave. and died a day later. He was 42.
